Lake Lure, North Carolina

Lake Lure is a premiere tourist destination spot in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. The Arbor cabins are located just around the corner from the marina and beach. Recently home to the HGTV Dream Home 2006, Lake Lure is a community of enthusiastic lake dwellers with adventure and relaxation alike in mind. With clear waterways, a beach and marina, Lake Lure has some of the best fishing around the south. Lying on the thermal belt of the Western North Carolina foothills, it is a temperate climate and very accomodational to everyone. 720 acres of lake make this a place not to be missed, according to National Geographic Magazine.

Discover the beauty and charm of Lake Lure on a covered tour boats while you learn about the natural and cultural history of Hickory Nut George. Walk along the boardwalk or have a lakeside picnic. Rent a kayak, pantoon, canoe, hydro bike or electric boat. The beach is open Memorial Day through Labor Day 10 AM to 6PM weather permitting. The Lake Lure Advenure Company provides guided fishing trips, and they will even take you to waterski, kneeboard, wakesurf, wakeboard or tube!

Hollywood has taken advantage of the natural beauty of the area. Dirty Dancing (1987) featured Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey dancing right here in the blue waters of Lake Lure, beneath a mountain moon. The footbridge and the foundations of camp buildings used in exterior shots for the film can also be seen. To reach the location by land, take Boys Camp Road and turn right on Chapel Point Road.

Firestarter (1984) starred Drew Barrymore, David Keith, and George C. Scott. When Drew Barrymore (as the young firestarter) and David Keith (as her father) went into hiding at her grandfather's camp, they drove down a stretch of highway 64/74A overlooking Lake Lure. The hideout cottage, with its unusual footbridge/dock where David Keith struggled with the kidnappers, can be seen from the tour boat at the east end of Sunset Cove.

Lake Lure is man-made. The dam was completed in September 1926 and the creation of the lake began. The full impoundment of Lake Lure was completed in 1927. At ordinary water levels, Lake Lure covers approximately 720 acres and has a shoreline of approximately 27 miles.
