Lake Lure

Located in the center of The Hickory Nut Gorge, Lake Lure is a premier tourist.  The Gorge, carved out by unstable glaciers millions of years ago, has many unique features.  Lake Lure alone, touted as one of the Top 10 most beautiful manmade lakes in the National Geographic, is crystal clear...drinking water quality with swimming time temps of upwards to 82 can see your own toes when treading water.

The lake is surrounded by huge peaks with major rock outcroppings....the mountain views are so very different here as we're in the bottom of The Gorge looing up at "in your face" views of this section of The Blue Ridge Mountains of The Great Appalachians....It takes your breath away!

. The Arbor Cabins are located only two-tenths of a mile from the Lake Lure Beach and Marina. Lake Lure is also home to the 2006 HGTV Dream Home. Lake Lure is a community of enthusiastic like-minded lake dwellers with adventure and relaxation a part of their daily lives. Located in a thermal belt, Lake Lure boasts a climate temperate enough to enjoy the outdoors year round, even the lake. Every season is enjoyable and beautiful here, especially our Spring and Fall colors. The moment you arrive in Lake Lure, you'll find yourself surrounded by unbelievable beauty, unsurpassed anywhere. The rivers, streams and waterfalls converge into a gorgeous 720-acre man-made lake. Centuries ago the hills and valleys gave way to boulders and cliffs, creating a multitude of awe-inspiring vistas at every turn.

Lake Lure is truly a unique destination that responds to our collective desires to get away from it all. With a diverse list of things to do, and places to visit, your stay can be as active or as relaxed as you wish.

Come discover the beauty and charm of Lake Lure yourself while taking a boat tour. You'll learn about the natural and cultural histories of the Hickory Nut Gorge. Walk along the boardwalk, have a lakeside picnic at the Morse Park Meadows, rent a kayak or canoe, and have an adventure all your own. Even Hollywood has taken advantage of the natural beauty of the area. Dirty Dancing (1987) featured Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey dancing right here in the blue waters of Lake Lure, beneath a mountain moon. Firestarter (1984) starred Drew Barrymore, David Keith, and George C. Scott. When Drew Barrymore (as the young Firestarter) and David Keith (as her father) went into hiding at her grandfather's camp, they drove down a stretch of highway 64/74A overlooking Lake Lure. The hideout cottage, with its unusual footbridge/dock where David Keith struggled with the kidnappers, can be seen from the tour boat at the east end of Sunset Cove.

Lake Lure is man-made; the dam was completed in September 1926 and the creation of the lake began. The full impoundment of Lake Lure was completed in 1927.  Lake Lure instantly became a very desirable summer getaway for those farther south trying to beat the summer heat.  The town has flourished since that time, yet maintains the geographic integrity of this magnificent natural phenomenon.  At ordinary water levels, Lake Lure covers approximately 720 acres and has a shoreline of approximately 27 miles. The Town of Lake Lure encompasses 13.25 square miles including the lake with a large central body of deep water, three long bays, an island of seven acres and many small bays, coves, and inlets against a background of forest clad hills and mountains with huge rock outcroppings.
